A fireplace that is clean is one that is attractive, safe and efficient. A clean fireplace is often the centerpiece of the home where friends and family gather.
But a dirty fireplace can be an eyesore and a turn off to guests. You’re also less likely to use a dirty, unattractive fireplace on those cold evenings at home.
To keep your fireplace attractive and operating safely, follow these three simple steps:
Step 1: Clear the ash.
Let the ash cool after a fire for a minimum of four days before removing. Use a wet/dry vacuum to suction the ash. No wet/dry vacuum? No problem. Simply cover the ash with wet coffee grounds to dampen the ash before shoveling it into a fireproof container.
Step 2: Cleaning the glass.
A solution of half warm water and half vinegar is the best way to clean cloudy fireplace glass. Spray the solution onto a rag or paper towel, and add a coarse material — like leftover ash — to thoroughly clean the glass. Finish cleaning the glass by wiping it with a damp microfiber cloth.
Step 3: Clean the surrounding area.
The material surrounding your fireplace will dictate how to clean it. For marble and other stones, use a mild solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Be sure to completely rinse the area and allow it to dry before starting another fire. If your fireplace is surrounded by brick, mix a quarter cup of all-purpose cleaner with a gallon of water for cleaning. Spray the brick with plain water to prevent the cleaning solution from saturating the brick too quickly, then use a stiff brush to scrub the area.
