Summer is finally upon us. For some people, summer means lazy days by the pool, day trips to Ocean City, and BBQs with friends. For homeowners, the warmer months mean preparing their homes for the future.

Homeowners often take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days to complete home improvement projects.  Below are some of the most popular projects to tackle during the summer months, as well as the reasons why summer is the best time to get them done.

10 Summer Home Improvement Projects

1. Home Exterior Painting

Homeowners typically paint the exterior of their homes every 5-7 years. There are several reasons for this:

  • After 5-7 years the color may begin to fade;
  • Rain, wind, and snow may have exposed some of the exterior wood which can lead to rot; and
  • Styles change.

The job can be a big undertaking, but it’s much easier to complete when the weather is warm and dry.  Plus, a freshly painted home can add curb appeal and boost your property value. Who doesn’t like coming home to a freshly painted home?

2. Landscaping

Summer is the perfect time to spruce up your yard with some new landscaping.  Planting flowers, trees, and shrubs can not only make your yard more attractive but can also help to cool your home and reduce energy costs. Adding a sprinkler system can help you save money on watering your yard and help you keep your grass green through the hottest days of summer.

3. Deck or Patio Construction/Repair

Constructing a new deck or patio, or repairing an existing one is best done during the summer months.  Getting these projects done early will allow you to enjoy them long into the fall.

While you are at it, consider adding a firepit as well.  This will extend your outdoor living even further into the season.

4. Home Addition

Adding to your home is a big project, but the warmer weather makes it easier to complete.  You won’t have to worry about working in the cold or dealing with bad weather conditions.

Also, if you are having someone else complete this project you may be able to plan your summer vacation away so you miss some of the loudest times of the project.

5. Roofing

Replacing or repairing your roof is another job that’s best done in the summer.  The hot sun can cause shingles to deteriorate so it’s important to get the job done before winter weather sets in. In addition, some roofers won’t work on roofs once the temperatures dip below 40 degrees.

6. Gutter Cleaning

Cleaning your gutters is an important part of home maintenance and it’s much easier to do when the leaves are off of the trees.  Summer is the perfect time to get this job done. Many people have not cleaned their gutters since fall and they are clogged with leaves and debris.

Getting to this project early is important because summer storms can cause the overflow from gutters to make their way into your home.

7. Window Replacement

Replacing old, outdated windows can make a big difference in your home’s energy efficiency.  Getting them replaced in the summer will mean warmer, less drafty winter nights.

One of the other benefits of replacing old windows is that they improve the curb appeal of your home.

Replacing your windows is a job that’s best done in the summer when you won’t have to worry about dealing with cold temperatures or inclement weather.

8. Home Insulation

Adding insulation to your attic or walls is another great way to improve your home’s energy efficiency.  Although this is not a sexy project, it is something that can save you thousands of dollars over time.

It’s a project that’s best done in the summer when the weather is warm and dry.

9. Home Office Update

If you started working from home during the pandemic and never went back to an in-person job, you may be ready to update your home office.  Shouldn’t you love the place you spend most of your day?

Summer is a great time to do this as you can take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days to get the job done. It’s also a time people are expected to take more time off of work.  So you can work from other locations without upsetting the apple cart.

10. Home Security Update

Home security is important all year round, but it’s especially important in the summer when people are more likely to be away from home on vacation.  Now is a great time to add or upgrade your home security system. Security systems have changed considerably over the last five years.  If you have not updated yours, now is the perfect time to do so.

Summer is the perfect time to take on those big home improvement projects.  With the warmer weather and longer days, you can get the job done quickly and enjoy your new space all season long!

One additional improvement we suggest is chimney repairs. Summer is a perfect time to get this inspected, repaired, and/or replaced while the weather is cooperating.
